Wisdom Teeth Removal
It Doesn't Have to Be Scary
Why Do We Remove Them?
Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last to come in, and often there just isn't enough room in your mouth. If left alone, problematic wisdom teeth can cause serious issues:
-
🦷
Impaction: Getting stuck under the gum or bone, causing pain, infection, and cysts.
-
📐
Crowding: Pushing your straight teeth out of alignment, undoing years of orthodontic work.
-
⚠️
Damage: Harming the roots of adjacent healthy molars or causing decay.
-
🦠
Infection: Partially erupted wisdom teeth trap food and bacteria, leading to painful infections.
😴 You'll Sleep Through It
We offer IV Sedation and Oral Sedation options. Most patients wake up and ask, "Is it done already?" You won't feel a thing during the procedure, and you'll have little to no memory of it.
Recovery: What to Expect
Recovery is faster than you think, especially with our minimally invasive techniques.
Rest & Recover
Rest, ice packs, and Netflix. Use gauze for the first few hours. Take prescribed medications as directed.
Peak Swelling
Swelling peaks then starts improving. Stick to soft foods like yogurt, smoothies, and mashed potatoes.
Back to Normal
Most patients are back to normal diet and routine. Any stitches will dissolve on their own.
Cost & Insurance
Wisdom teeth extraction is often covered by dental insurance. We'll verify your coverage before we start so there are no surprises. For patients without insurance, we offer flexible payment plans and accept CareCredit.

How much does wisdom teeth removal cost in Beaverton/Hillsboro?
Wisdom teeth removal in the Beaverton and Hillsboro area typically costs $150-$400 per tooth for simple extractions and $300-$600 per tooth for surgical (impacted) extractions. All four wisdom teeth usually range from $800-$2,500 total. With IV sedation, add $300-$600. Most dental insurance covers wisdom teeth removal. Aloha Dental Implant & Surgical Center offers CareCredit financing and payment plans.
Does wisdom teeth removal hurt?
With proper anesthesia and sedation, you won't feel anything during the procedure. At Aloha Dental Implant & Surgical Center, we offer IV sedation (you'll sleep through it) and oral sedation options. Most patients wake up asking "Is it done already?" Post-operative discomfort is typically manageable with prescription pain medication for 2-3 days and over-the-counter pain relievers thereafter.
How long does wisdom teeth recovery take?
Most patients feel significantly better within 3-4 days after wisdom teeth removal. Swelling peaks on days 2-3 then steadily improves. By day 7, the majority of patients are back to their normal diet and activities. Complete gum healing takes 3-4 weeks, while full bone healing takes 2-3 months. Dr. Ostovar's minimally invasive techniques help accelerate recovery.
What is the best age to remove wisdom teeth?
The ideal age for wisdom teeth removal is typically between 16-21 years old, when roots are not fully formed and bone is less dense, making extraction easier and recovery faster. However, we successfully remove wisdom teeth in patients of all ages, from teenagers to adults in their 60s. If your wisdom teeth are causing problems at any age, they should be evaluated and likely removed.
What are impacted wisdom teeth?
Impacted wisdom teeth are teeth that cannot fully emerge through the gums due to lack of space or abnormal angle. They may be fully impacted (completely under bone), partially impacted (partially through gum), or soft tissue impacted (under gum but not bone). Impacted teeth are more likely to cause pain, infection, damage to adjacent teeth, and cysts. Dr. Ostovar has extensive experience removing all types of impacted wisdom teeth.
What is IV sedation for wisdom teeth removal?
IV sedation (intravenous sedation) delivers medication directly into your bloodstream through a small IV, allowing you to sleep comfortably through the entire procedure. You'll have little to no memory of the surgery. It's the preferred option for removing multiple wisdom teeth, impacted teeth, or for patients with dental anxiety. Dr. Ostovar is certified in IV sedation and monitors you throughout the procedure.
What can I eat after wisdom teeth removal?
For the first 24-48 hours, stick to cold, soft foods: ice cream, smoothies (no straws!), yogurt, applesauce, and pudding. Days 2-5, add warm (not hot) soft foods: mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soup, and pasta. Avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, or acidic foods for 1-2 weeks. Most importantly: NO STRAWS or smoking for at least 5 days, as the suction can cause painful dry socket.
What is dry socket and how do I prevent it?
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged, exposing bone and nerves. It causes severe pain 3-4 days after surgery. Prevent dry socket by: avoiding straws, smoking, and spitting for 5+ days; eating soft foods; following all post-op instructions; and gently rinsing with saltwater after 24 hours. Dr. Ostovar's careful technique minimizes dry socket risk. If it occurs, we treat it promptly at our Beaverton office.
Can I go to work or school after wisdom teeth removal?
Plan to rest for at least 24-48 hours after surgery. If you receive IV sedation, you'll need someone to drive you home and should not make important decisions for 24 hours. Most patients can return to work or school after 2-3 days, depending on the complexity of the extraction and their recovery. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for 5-7 days.
Should I have all four wisdom teeth removed at once?
In most cases, yes. Removing all four wisdom teeth in one visit means you only go through surgery, anesthesia, and recovery once rather than multiple times. It's also more cost-effective and less time off work/school. With IV sedation, you'll sleep through the entire procedure. Dr. Ostovar routinely removes all four wisdom teeth safely in a single visit at our Beaverton/Hillsboro area practice.
Is wisdom teeth removal covered by insurance?
Yes, most dental insurance plans cover wisdom teeth extraction, typically at 50-80% after your deductible. Some medical insurance plans also cover wisdom teeth removal when medically necessary (impaction, infection). Our Beaverton office team verifies your insurance benefits before treatment so there are no surprises. We also accept CareCredit, Proceed Finance, and offer in-house payment plans.
What are the risks of not removing wisdom teeth?
Leaving problematic wisdom teeth in place can lead to: recurrent infections (pericoronitis), damage to adjacent teeth, cyst or tumor formation around impacted teeth, crowding and shifting of other teeth, decay in hard-to-clean areas, and jawbone damage. Even wisdom teeth that aren't currently causing symptoms can become problematic later, which is why preventive removal is often recommended.
Can I drive myself home after wisdom teeth surgery?
If you receive IV sedation or oral sedation, you absolutely cannot drive yourself home—you must have a responsible adult drive you. The sedation effects take several hours to wear off, and driving would be dangerous. Even with local anesthesia only, we recommend having someone available to drive if possible. Please arrange transportation before your appointment at our Beaverton office.
How long does the wisdom teeth removal procedure take?
The surgical time for removing all four wisdom teeth typically takes 30-60 minutes, depending on their position and impaction level. Plan on being at our Beaverton office for about 90 minutes total, including preparation, the procedure, and recovery time. Patients receiving IV sedation may need additional recovery time before being released to go home with their driver.
Do you offer emergency wisdom teeth extraction?
Yes! Aloha Dental Implant & Surgical Center offers urgent/emergency wisdom teeth extraction for patients in the Hillsboro, Beaverton, and Aloha areas experiencing severe pain, infection, or swelling. We're open 7 days a week—Monday through Friday 7 AM - 7 PM, Saturday and Sunday 8 AM - 2 PM. Call (503) 822-0096 for same-day or next-day emergency appointments when you're in pain.
